Anura Kumara Dissanayake
Sri Lanka President 2025, His Excellency Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD), became the 10th President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on 23 September 2024. His election marked a historic change in the island nation’s political landscape, breaking the long-standing dominance of traditional political dynasties. Known for his roots in student activism and leftist politics, Dissanayake represents a new generation of leadership, grounded in grassroots movements and a commitment to reform.
Early Life and Education
Anura Kumara Dissanayake was born on 24 November 1968 in the small village of Dewahuwa, located in Sri Lanka’s Central Province. He grew up in a modest household; his father worked in agriculture before moving into a supportive role in the survey department, while his mother was a dedicated homemaker.
In 1972, his family relocated to Thambuththegama in the North Central Province. He began his early education at Thambuththegama Primary School, later moving to Thambuththegama Madhya Maha Vidyalaya, where he excelled in the Science-Mathematics stream during his A-Level exams.
In 1992, Dissanayake joined the University of Kelaniya, transferring from the University of Peradeniya, and graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree. During his university years, he became actively involved in student politics, serving as president of the University Buddhist Association and participating in the Socialist Students’ Union, the student wing of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). These early experiences helped him build a strong foundation in activism, public service, and political leadership.
Entry into Politics
Dissanayake formally entered politics during the turbulent late 1980s, a period marked by political unrest and significant student activism in Sri Lanka. He joined the Socialist Students’ Union in 1987, gaining experience in grassroots organizing and advocacy.
By 1997, he had become the national organiser of the Socialist Students’ Union and a member of the JVP Central Committee. In 1998, he was elevated to the Political Bureau of the JVP, further cementing his influence within the party.
His first parliamentary opportunity came in 2000, when he was elected via the national list. In the 2004 general election, he ran from the Kurunegala District and was elected with the highest number of preferential votes, demonstrating his growing popularity among the people. During this period, he also served as Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation (2004-2005), gaining valuable experience in governance and policymaking.
Rise to Party Leadership
As his political career progressed, Dissanayake became a prominent figure in Sri Lanka politics. In 2008, he was appointed leader of the JVP parliamentary group, and in 2014, he was elected leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna at the party’s 7th National Congress.
Under his leadership, the party shifted focus toward addressing corruption, promoting social justice, and supporting grassroots initiatives. His commitment to transparency and reform helped the party gain credibility and attract a younger generation of politically engaged citizens.
The Road to the Presidency
In 2019, Dissanayake made his first attempt at the presidency under the banner of the newly formed National People’s Power (NPP) coalition. Although he secured only about 3% of the vote, his persistence and dedication kept him in the public eye.
The political and economic crisis in Sri Lanka in 2024, marked by widespread protests and dissatisfaction with traditional political elites, created an opportunity for new leadership. Dissanayake successfully campaigned on promises of reform, anti-corruption measures, and a fresh political direction, leading to his election as Sri Lanka President 2025 on 22 September 2024.
His victory symbolized a shift in the electorate’s priorities, emphasizing leadership grounded in activism, integrity, and responsiveness to public concerns rather than inherited political power.
